Perfection is a Performance that Separates Us + Offerings

My ideas are always exploratory, meant to encourage contemplation, not to impose or pretend to be a destination, my ideas are always in a process of evolving and changing. Just like me.

Hello Reader,

Perfectionism is separating us from others, the land, from our wild, and from truly becoming and feeling acceptance.

Perfection is the ultimate disconnector and isolator…

Stay with me here, perfectionism is subversive and I am connecting it into some diverse areas by exploring the etymology of the word and the impacts it has on us individually and culturally. I am going to make links between perfectionism, lack of desire, purity culture, and our loss of relationality to nature and our innate wildness.

Perfection can only be a performed… it can not actually be achieved.

the 12c. Latin root of the word itself suggests it's a state of “completion, a finishing, perfection.”

Yet, all living things are in a continual state of becoming, we are forever changing, because to become stagnant… well, ultimately that’s death... and in nature to die is to return to feeding what is alive and still becoming within the ecosystem. So, nature teaches us that even stagnancy ends up in a relational process of becoming something for another thing to thrive.

Perfection with its finality when applied to any living thing… is just not realistic.

Imagine we achieved perfection, what would be left to desire? There would be no thirst for evolving, for understanding… there would be no excitement around learning and growing. I mean you’re perfect, you're complete. No desire, no growth... how boring!

The word desire or in 12c. Old French, de sidere means “from the stars.” To desire is to long for, to wish for, it is to understand the relationality with the unseen.

Desire is to let your longing be known and “await what the stars will bring.” I am not talking about manifestation here, this is about having a deep relational understanding of the interconnection of all living things and the interplay between them. Perfectionism as a completion leaves us no longer needing to practice relationality.

It is in our relationality with life, with nature that we get to see our wildness, our uniqueness reflected back at us. It is to understand that life of all forms should have rights and respect… and autonomy. Perfectionism separates us from a deep level of intimacy with nature, with messiness, with necessary chaos.

Perfectionism is considered to be a state of flawlessness...

The idea of perfection is deeply rooted in purity culture. It is an attempt to perform goodness and wholeness. By the 14c. perfection was seen as "flawlessness, correctness, purity.”

Purity culture is deeply colonial and categorizes things as acceptable or unacceptable. Good or bad. Right or wrong. It creates dichotomy and polarization. It loves to simplify and separate what is necessary for balance and should never be separated.

Perfectionism will always leave you feeling unknown, alone, and not seen because it is a performance, it is unrealistic, and requires stagnancy which isn’t in the nature aliveness.

Let's become unruly, wild, brave, and interconnected, let's dance in the spaces in-between the dichotomies. Let's step away from the claws of perfectionism, purity bullshit, and being easily controllable.

Want more, last year I wrote a newsletter called Perfectionism, Loneliness, and Feral Medicine.

We begin October 3.

This is a small closed group so we can deepen our relationality.

This iteration will have us exploring a specific topic each week, deconstructing the personas we had to adopt and practice bravely stepping into more congruent ways of relating.
